What is Peer Support?

Peer support is a key resource for reintegration. Being in prison is traumatic. The time, relationships, and experiences each individual misses while incarcerated can make relating to others more challenging after they’re released. It’s much easier to relate to people who have had similar experiences, and it can be difficult to find a mentor who understands.

Bonafide’s community of peers are mentors who understand reentry.

Our monthly peer support group sets people up for success with events focused on relationships, computer and phone skills, celebrating special occasions, and more.

Each month’s discussions might help group members process difficult emotions, build each other up with encouragement, or share feedback to help solve problems. Rebuilding your life among a group of peers on the same path makes the journey less lonely and more successful.

In addition to group events, a Bonafide staff person is available 24 hours a day to answer questions, provide moral support and guidance, and help people who have questions or are struggling.

This support can help people make better decisions when they feel overwhelmed and helps them feel more confident in navigating the free world, knowing that support is always available.

As part of our three year improvement plan, we will be training staff in trauma-informed peer mentoring and advising practices, and working toward certifications (e.g., Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Certification). This evidence-based training will more effectively support our community, while also providing important support for staff who are subject to secondary trauma.
